Tang dynasty figure of Yang Guifei, concubine over whom Emperor Xuanzong lost an empire. She set the standard of beauty in China. Under her influence the plump look was in great vogue, as well as a hairstyle known as “just fallen off the horse look”, the hairstyle having come about one day when Lady Yang’s elaborate coiffure had become disheveled after tumbling from her horse. The other court ladies emulated her hairstyle without having to go through the trouble of falling off their horses.
