Music and dance occupied a central place in Chinese ceremonials during the Tang dynasty, a tradition which is reflected in tomb figurines such as this one. Elegant figures, along with groups of fierce warriors, were used as tomb guardians to both accompany and protect the deceased into the afterlife.
