The literati lived elegant and graceful lives, either totally oblivious to the times or quietly lamenting the turmoil's of the society. In these peaceful surroundings the literati pursued their intellectual interest, cultivating their minds through studies of Confucian, Daoist, Buddhist works and expressing feeling through work of art and music. Such was domestic life of the literati. The home was a respite from the superficial splendors of the decadent and social unrest. The furniture thus provides an elegant background to these intellectual activities. This withdrawal and simplicity of their lives, is thus reflected in the art of the period.
