In ancient China, stool was a prestigious seat, a symbol of dignity and high status, used by commanders on the battlefield and even depicted with Buddhist deities. Later, when chairs became widespread in China, the stool lost its exclusivity and became a popular seat, widely used by all sorts of people, from emperors to commoners. Light and easily collapsible, stools can be carried anywhere slung over the shoulder or hung on the pack of an itinerant peddler.
