A universal and basic type of furniture, stools have been in continuous use since ancient times. In China an early depiction of a stool appears in what is probably a ceremonial context. Among wooden stools, folding models were most popular for use outside because they were light and could easily be reduced to a compact size and slung over the shoulder.
