Dating from the Song dynasty (960-1279) onward, many examples are found of similarly shaped small chests with drawers and removable trays that reflected various uses. Officials used them as stationary boxes to contain writing implements, seals and red seal ink. When they were fit with folding mirror stand, ladies used them as cosmetic cases.
