This wedding chest is elaborately decorated in intricate gold leaf painting of traditional auspicious symbols such as lotus flowers for pure and prosperity and happiness, pomegranate fruits for fertility. The top rail of this wedding chest allows a round wooden pole to go across the stretcher that has carved motifs on, so that two persons would be able to carry them on the wedding day. The outer panel opens to an interior that shelves were inserted to the side support for us of storage compartments. .

Details

Usually wedding chest is found in the middle part of China around Zhejiang and Jiangsu area. Such chest were used in the wedding day where the bride would store all her personal belonging, mainly linen and clothes, to be carried with her to the new home. The number of wedding chests brought with the bride is of significant importance as it reflects the wealth of the bride's family. "Not to loose face", the only wedding chest is skillful carved and made but the contents must also be highly respectable.
