The central carving of the canopy often depicts phoenix - the queen of bird, also a symbol of Empress. A bride was allowed to wear Phoenix on her wedding day, which indicated that she was "Empress for the day". The background of phoenix if carved with floral, symbolizes prosperity and wealth. Canopy was always decorated with lacquer and genuine gold leaf, with an attractive arrangement of lattice works and carvings which were put together with wooden join. .

Details

The Canopy carving was originally the ceiling of the wedding canopy bed and usually found in Southern China, especially in the area of Teochew city. Visually and symbolically the canopy bed was the major piece of furniture in the traditional Chinese household. It was considered essential for setting up basic housekeeping and was part of the bridge's dowry.
