Placed in the center of the back wall in a main hall, one of these extraordinary side tables dominated the room. Above it hung a single scroll, and a few treasured possessions were placed on its surface. Thus the table, like the mounting of the scrolls, served to support and display. The three dimensional objects elevated on the table and the picture or writing elevated by their mounting became accessible for contemplation and evaluation and were prominent indicators of taste, status and wealth of their owners..
